LCD vs. Plasma TVs

Should you choose LCD or Plasma?

High definition gives you the best quality picture and soundThe Basics

HDTV (High-Definition Television) refers to the superior signal a television can process, either from programming or from upconverted and high-definition (HD) DVDs (more on DVDs below). HDTV scans in a widescreen format with Dolby digital surround sound, giving you the highest quality picture and sound. LCD and Plasma are different technologies used to create an image. Both have models that can support HD.

  • LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) – Image created from a light source, electrical current and liquid crystal solution.
  • Plasma – Image created from glowing ionized gas.

LCD vs. Plasma: Which is best for me?

LCD TVs

  • Sharper picture – LCD TVs tend to have higher resolution than Plasma TVs, meaning there are more pixels on a screen to produce a sharper image.
  • Weigh less – On average, LCD TVs weigh about 20% less than Plasma TVs, making them easier to mount on walls or place on TV stands.
Choose LCD for the sharpest picture, least glare and lowest power consumption
  • Less power consumption LCD TVs require up to 30% less power than Plasma TVs.
  • Less glare – LCD screens reflect very little light. You can watch an LCD TV in a brightly lit room without significant glare no more need to draw the curtains or turn off the lights!
  • Unaffected by altitude – LCD TVs aren't affected by high altitudes like Plasma displays, where the gas inside each pixel has to work harder to produce the picture. High altitude can also increase the power consumption of a Plasma TV.

Plasma TVs

  • Less expensive – The biggest advantage of Plasma TVs right now is price, so you can get the biggest screen size for your money.
  • Wider viewing angle – You can watch a Plasma TV from almost any corner of the room without the screen looking distorted. This means you can have lots of guests and everyone will have a great view!
  • Clearer action scenes – Plasma refreshes more quickly than LCD so rapid movements can be displayed without blurring. Faster response time is better for playing video games and viewing action movies and sports.

You'll find both high definition TVs and DVDs at your neighborhood Fred MeyerHow can I get the best picture?

No matter how great your TV is, picture quality can only be as good as the signal your TV is receiving, whether from programs or DVDs.

  • TV signal Contact your satellite or cable TV provider to get more information about high-definition (HD) programming; this is the only way you can take advantage of the superb picture quality of Plasma and LCD TVs while watching television programs.
  • Playing DVDs You can also enjoy HD-quality movies through a DVD upconverter, HD DVD player or Blu-ray DVD Player:
    • DVD upconverters increase the resolution of regular DVDs to create a near HD-quality picture.
    • HD DVD players/Blu-ray DVD players increase the resolution of regular DVDs, as well as play special DVDs already with HD-quality picture.
  • Connection between DVD player and HDTV To receive the best picture, use an HDMI cable to connect your DVD player and TV.
